Make food real again

Food Shouldn't Be a Mystery.

Everyone should know where their food comes from — and have the confidence to play a part in producing it. Join us on a journey from paddock to plate… and back again.

Reconnecting children with where food comes from

Let’s make food real again

Most of us are only a few generations removed from growing our own food. These days, many people know more about their mobile phone than they do about where dinner came from before it reached the supermarket shelf.

We think that’s a little backwards.

That’s not a criticism. It’s simply the way life has changed.

Heritage Farms exists to help rebuild that connection—whether that’s buying direct from the people who raised your food, spending a few hours on a working farm discovering where food comes from, or learning the practical skills to produce some of it yourself.

You don’t need to become a farmer. You just need somewhere trustworthy to begin.

"The more you understand your food, the better choices you can make for yourself and your family. Everything we do on the farm starts with that simple idea."

The Farm Gate

No complicated traceability statement required. Our food was born and raised in a paddock just a few steps from the shop. Real food, direct from the people who raised it.

The Shed

You’ve heard the saying about teaching a man to fish. In The Shed, you’ll learn the skills to grow, make, mend and figure things out for yourself.

Ever wondered what farm life is really like? Come behind the farm gate. Meet the animals, see how we farm and discover where real food comes from. Fair warning — your boots will get dirty. We may even put you to work.

The People Behind the Farm

We’re Rod and Rebecca Byfield. Between us, we’ve spent years building businesses, raising our family, raising animals (almost the same thing), solving problems and learning that farm life rarely goes according to plan.

Heritage Farms began with a simple goal: to produce exceptionally good food for our own family.

How that eventually grew into The Farm Gate, The Shed and a working farm people can visit is a longer story. Strangely enough, it begins with the Great Loo Paper Shortage of 2020.

These days, we’re sharing both the food and the knowledge behind it with others.

Our Animals

Our Belted Galloway cattle and Wessex Saddleback pigs are heritage breeds—hardy, distinctive animals with a long farming history. We chose them not simply for how they look—and no, we are NOT Collingwood fans—but for their temperament, resilience and the exceptional quality of food they produce. They take a little longer to grow, but we believe the extra time and effort are more than made up for in quality and taste.

There is another important reason we chose heritage breeds: to help preserve valuable genetics that have come seriously close to being lost.

Around the farm

There’s always something going on around here. New animals, fresh food at the Farm Gate, upcoming days Behind the Gate, lessons taking shape in The Shed—and the occasional plan that went sideways before breakfast.

Here’s the latest.

What people are saying

We can tell you what we believe about good food, practical skills and life on the farm. But we'd much rather let the people who've visited, learned and shared a meal with us do the talking.

Farm Ops

Heritage Farms is also a working agricultural business. We support farmers, landholders and industry partners through practical contracting, livestock breeding, regenerative farming and better ways to turn local food by-products into useful feed.

It is not always the glamorous side of farming, but it is often where the most interesting problems get solved.

Regenerative Farming

Working with the land, not against it.

Farm Services

Practical contracting, advice and problem-solving.

Hardy animals and genetics worth preserving.

Circular Feeds

Turning suitable food by-products into useful livestock feed.

Let's Start a Conversation

Whether you’re an individual, family, school, business, researcher, farmer, or community organisation, we’d love to explore how we can learn, collaborate, and grow together.
